The Catholic Community of St. Thomas More in Chapel Hill, NC will welcome Fr. Michael Fones, O.P. and Ms. Sherry Anne Weddell, co-directors of the Catherine of Siena Institutei Colorado Springs, Colorado, to lead a workshop intended to help Catholics discern their unique spiritual gifts -- gifts given by the Holy Spirit through Baptism and Confirmation --- the work to which God is calling them, and how He has empowered them to use their gifts for His purposes.
The Catherine of Siena Institute is “a program of the Western Dominican Province dedicated to equipping parishes for the formation of lay Catholics for their mission in the world.” The Called and Gifted Workshop introduces participants to their baptismal call as apostles -- what it means to be a lay apostle, the Catholic Church’s teaching about spiritual gifts (known as charisms), the basics steps of gifts discernment, 24 of the most common charisms, and how discernment helps to find happiness in life as one discovers his/her call from God.
Attendees will take the Catholic Spiritual Gifts Inventory, a questionnaire created especially for Catholics by Institute co-founder, Sherry Weddell, to help them begin to discern the gifts which they have received from God for use in building up the local community. The workshop program also helps a community to discern what gifts God has bestowed on its members that could be used to further the growth and development of the Church.
To each individual the manifestation of the Spirit is given for some benefit. To one is given through the Spirit the expression of wisdom; to another the expression of knowledge according to the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit; to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit; to another mighty deeds; to another prophecy; to another discernment of spirits; to another varieties of tongues; to another interpretation of tongues... As a body is one though it has many parts, and all the parts of the body, though many, are one body, so also Christ. (1 Corinthians 12:7-10,12)
On Friday, September 23, 2011 from 7-10 pm, participants will learn about our mission as Christians and the role lay people have in that mission. They will take the Catholic Spiritual Gifts Inventory, a series of 120 questions to help examine their work, relationships, and spiritual experiences in light of 24 of the most common gifts of the Holy Spirit. On Saturday, September 24, 2011, from 9:30am to 4:30 pm, the workshop will focus on the spiritual gifts and on steps to begin and the implications for gifts discernment.
This workshop is part of the effort of St. Thomas More to encourage the active participation of all members in the life, ministry and mission of the Church. Called and Gifted workshops help parishes and individuals refocus their lives by helping them discover God’s plan for their lives and their community. If you have wondered what God asks of you, or how to respond to His calling in your life; or if you don't really believe that you have a God-given gift or you are not feeling fed or challenged in your faith life or in your ministry work, this workshop is for you.
Join members of St. Thomas More on September 23 and 24 as we begin to discern, discover, and develop our spiritual gifts and accomplish great things for God. The cost of the workshop is $25 which includes materials and lunch on Saturday.
