Confirmation Requirements

Confirmation is a two-year program beginning in the 9th grade. Below are the requirements for Confirmation:

Remote (first year of preparation; 9th grade):

  • Explore the Catholic faith through study of Creed, Liturgy, the sacraments and prayer
  • Attend at least 2 social events
  • Good class attendance (No more than 4 absences)
  • Begin working on service hours (5 hours of parish ministry and 5 hours of community service per year)
  • Think about choosing a sponsor
  • Parent meetings (dates: Oct. 2 or 5)
  • Submit a copy of baptismal certificate if not baptized at St. Thomas More


Immediate (second year of preparation; 10th grade):

  • Select sponsor to help with spiritual growth (sponsor forms due Oct. 28)
  • Write a letter to sponsor
  • Good Class Attendance (No more than 4 absences)
  • Attend the Confirmation retreat (date: March 16-17, 2012; location: Camp New Hope )
  • Parent meetings (Sept. 25 or 28)
  • Personal Interview in March
  • Receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation
  • Complete service hours by early April (5 hours of parish ministry and 5 hours of community service)
  • Confirmation rehearsal (Date: TBD)
  • Sponsor and Candidate Workshop (Date: Feb 11) 
  • Sponsor Dinner (Date: Feb 11) 
  • Meeting with the Bishop (Date: Monday, May 21) 
  • 20 Questions
  • Confirmation Liturgy (Date: Monday, May 21 at 6:30pm)*
  • Attend at least 2 social events

*Please note that confirmation for STM students in 2012 will take place at Blessed Sacrament in Burlington

Follow these official church guidelines when selecting a Confirmation sponsor:


  • Sponsor must be at least 16 years old
  • Sponsor must be a fully initiated Catholic (one who has celebrated Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation)
  • The sponsor must not be bound by any church penalty and should lead a life in harmony with the faith and the role to be undertaken
  • A Sponsor must not be the parent of the one to be confirmed

Confirmation Curriculum

 To parents of older Confirmation Candidates:

If your son or daughter starts the program in the second year, he or she will most likely be confirmed in the 11th grade. Please consult with the Director of Youth Ministry to determine readiness and preparation for Confirmation for any student who begins after the 9th grade.

Confirmed Already? Well then, your journey of faith has just begun! Be sure to register for the WIRED youth program at STM! WIRED is a program designed for 11th and 12th graders which meets on Sunday nights in the Youth House from 6:30-8:00pm. Teen participants are challenged in their faith, encouraged to share their faith with others, and strengthened for the journey toward college. Be sure to register for WIRED online or by filling out a registration form which can be found on the table in the Narthex. Contact Georgie Clemens, Director of Youth Ministry for more information at 942-6240.

Effects of the Holy Spirit in Confirmation

  • Baptismal grace is increased and deepened
  • An indelible mark is imprinted on the soul (like Baptism)
  • The Confirmand is rooted more deeply as a "child of God"
  • The Confirmand is rooted more deeply to Christ
  • The gifts of the Holy Spirit increase
  • The Confirmand's bond with the Church is perfected
  • Special grace is given to to the Confirmand to spread and defend the faith by word and deed as true witnesses
  • The Confirmand is enabled to confess Christ boldly and never be ashamed of the Cross

Minister of the Sacrament
The ordinary minister of the sacrament of confirmation is the Bishop, the head of the local church.
