Service Opportunities
St. Thomas More General Outreach Ministries
Service Hour Forms
Here are community service and parish ministry opportunities coming up for the Fall Semester 2009 and some at the beginning of the Spring Semester 2010. Be sure to sign up for things early so that you don't get caught at the end of the year with no service hours!!
Please remember that people are counting on your support. When you sign up for a service opportunity it is very important that you follow through and participate in that obligation.
Elementary and Adult Formation
Children’s Liturgy of the Word (CLOW) - an ongoing commitment for “shepherds” to assist with the teachers during the 5:15 and the 9:15 Masses. The new schedule does not come out until January, but youth can sign up to be included now. Please have the youth think about how many months they wish to be on the schedule since we do a calendar for the whole year. Contact Mollie Berry: mberry@st-thomasmore.org
Elementary Faith Development (EFD) - we still need more Youth Catechists to assist with the two sessions for EFD. Youth are asked to be present to the children, help pass out materials, and assist the lead catechists. Please contact Mollie Berry at mberry@st-thomasmore.org.
The Library Committee - the Library is in hibernation now, but when the new building is ready the Library Committee will needs lots of hands, for cataloguing and shelving books, and for presence on Sunday mornings and at other times for checking books in and out. However, there is currently need for youth to be on the Committee to advise on materials of interest to youth. Please contact Jim Hynes at jhynes@st-thomasmore.org.
TYM
The Knights of Columbus of St. Thomas More Parish will be conducting its annual Operation LAMB fund raising project to support local community service agencies who serve those with intellectual disabilities. This year’s fund raising weekend is October 15-17. We are asking any youth interested to volunteer to sell Tootsie rolls at local grocery stores this weekend. Please contact John Aluise if you can help out at aluise1942@bellsouth.net
Youth needed to sell concert tickets after all masses: Youth may gain confirmation parish volunteers hours by helping to sell Tony Melendez concert tickets at all masses the weekends of June 26/27 and July 3/4. A table will be set up in the Narthex after mass for the sale of the tickets. Tickets and the cash box will be provided, all you need to do is smile and encourage parishoners to buy tickets. Contact Georgie Clemens (GClemens@st-thomasmore.org) if you can help out.
Outreach Ministries
Caring and Sharing Center - Ongoing - children under 17 can come with an adult to the center to guests find clothes and assist on scheduled sorting days after hours. Regularly designated sorters work on early Tuesday and Friday a.m. so if youth have time off in the morning they can assist on those days as well. Please contact Marie Clark (mariepaulaclark@yahoo.com) or Marilyn Kearns (mrkearns@nc.rr.com) for more information.
Habitat for Humanity - Although we will probably not be working on a house in January, we will start an apostles build in the spring and do landscaping on the house we are building now. Students can help provide lunches and help with landscaping activities. Contact Susan Doyle at spdoyle@bellsouth.net.
Hunger Walk for IFC - STM participates each year in a walk for hunger with the IFC - usually in the spring - we recruit volunteers to walk and donate at the masses. Youth can help either by walking or helping to collect donations after Mass. This usually occurs during Lent. Contact Tish Galu at galu@bellsouth.net or Mary Ellen McGuire at memcguire@st-thomasmore.org.
Migrant Worker Outreach - each late spring and summer we collect toiletry items for migrant workers. Youth can help by putting the kits together. Please contact Riley Flowers at rflowers@email.unc.edu.
Homestart - Homestart is the women and children's shelter on Homestead Road. Our parish, along with other churches, provides dinners for the women each week. We are always in need of additional help. Youth can help by: thinking up a menu, shopping for ingredients, paying for the ingredients, making the dinner (at their house or the shelter), and deliver the dinner to the shelter. They would receive hours for all of the work, and it normally totals at least 5 -6 hours per dinner. Youth are encouraged to work in pairs or groups for this project. Please contact Julie Bauers at jbauers@nc.rr.com for more information. She will help work with the youth's schedule as well.
Miscellaneous
Office Help - Have a day off from school, like technology, then come and earn a service hour or two at the Parish Office. Contact Jennifer Bartnik at jbartnik@st-thomasmore.org for more information on the Homily Card project.
Youth House Maintenance - Youth are needed to help put the youth house storage areas back in working order. Youth can help clean and organize both the back closet and the loft storage areas. For more information please contact Maria Del Rosario at mdelrosario@st-thomasmore.org.
Knights of Columbus - TBA
For WIRED Members Only:
RCIA-C - we need youth as sponsors for kids in the RCIA. There are several important aspects of this ministry. (1) It will be a two year commitment (until Easter 2011 with the present group), (2) might better suit Hispanic youth, as all our catechumens are Hispanic, (3) the youth need to be Confirmed. Please contact Jim Hynes at jhynes@st-thomasmore.org.
Lectoring - The lector ministry would love to have some more young lectors. Youth are welcome to come to a new lector training. Usually youth can lector for at least a year before they head off to college. They can call or email Pat Lewis at 929-3537 or luv22tor@aol.com at any time for information.
